Joseph Potts Thomas Papers, 1859-1890.

Papers of Dr. Joseph Potts Thomas include medical writings and miscellaneous material. The collection includes Thomas's thesis, "Hourglass contraction of the uterus," presented for the attainment of the degree of Doctor of Medicine at Shelby Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee. A handwritten ledger contains prescriptions for medicines. A memory book contains clippings, a printed copy of the Inaugural Address of Dr. Thomas to the Kentucky State Medical Society, June 3, 1886." The collection also includes a petition for a "stock law" to be passed in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and an 1866 letter of introduction from Brigadier General R. W. Johnson for Mr. S. C. Mercer, editor of the Nashville Press and Times, endorsed by Brigadier General William D. Whipple and Brigadier General George H. Thomas.

Thomas was born at Newsom's Depot, Southampton County, Virginia, five miles (8 km) from the North Carolina border. His father, John Thomas, of Welsh descent, and his mother, Elizabeth Rochelle Thomas, a descendant of French Huguenot immigrants, had six children. George had three sisters and two brothers.
